{"id":13615,"date":"2025-10-20T08:49:18","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T08:49:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fishfmonline.com\/?p=13615"},"modified":"2025-10-20T08:49:18","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T08:49:18","slug":"military-approach-wont-end-galamsey-national-coalition-on-mining","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fishfmonline.com\/?p=13615","title":{"rendered":"Military approach won\u2019t end galamsey \u2014 National Coalition on Mining"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"193\" data-end=\"371\">The National Coalition on Mining has cautioned that deploying the military and police to combat illegal mining, popularly known as\u00a0<em data-start=\"324\" data-end=\"334\">galamsey<\/em>, will not achieve lasting results.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"373\" data-end=\"527\">According to the Coalition, the government must adopt a more strategic and sustainable approach if it truly intends to win the fight against the menace.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"529\" data-end=\"714\">A member of the Coalition, Emmanuel Ellimah, on Sunday, October 19, said past military interventions have proven ineffective, as illegal mining continues to thrive despite several operations over the years.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"716\" data-end=\"969\">\u201cUnder former President Kufuor, we had\u00a0<em data-start=\"755\" data-end=\"775\">Operation Flashout<\/em>. During President Mahama\u2019s first term, there was\u00a0<em data-start=\"825\" data-end=\"843\">Operation Cowleg<\/em>. Under President Akufo-Addo, we\u2019ve had\u00a0<em data-start=\"883\" data-end=\"903\">Operation Vanguard<\/em>,\u00a0<em data-start=\"905\" data-end=\"925\">Operation Halt One<\/em>, and\u00a0<em data-start=\"931\" data-end=\"951\">Operation Halt Two<\/em>,\u201d he recounted.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_ad jeg_ad_article jnews_content_inline_2_ads  \">\n<div class=\"ads-wrapper align-center \">\n<div class=\"ads_shortcode\">\n<div class=\"a-single a-10\">\u201cIf the military could stop galamsey, we wouldn\u2019t still be having this conversation. That\u2019s why we are calling for a shift in the measures being applied to tackle this problem,\u201d he added.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"1162\" data-end=\"1346\">Mr. Ellimah emphasised the need for stronger community involvement, better regulation of small-scale mining, and enforcement of environmental standards to ensure long-term solutions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1162\" data-end=\"1346\">Meanwhile, the government has put together an inter-security agency, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), to embark on a brutal fight against galamsey.
