{"id":14350,"date":"2025-11-10T15:51:58","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T15:51:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fishfmonline.com\/?p=14350"},"modified":"2025-11-10T15:51:58","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T15:51:58","slug":"coup-plotter-sentenced-to-death-bright-debrah-granted-gh%c2%a22-5m-bail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fishfmonline.com\/?p=14350","title":{"rendered":"Coup plotter sentenced to death, Bright Debrah granted GH\u00a22.5m bail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"cf0\">One of the six persons sentenced to death by hanging for attempting to overthrow the government, Bright Alan Debrah Ofosu, has been granted bail pending the hearing of his appeal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"cf0\">The High Court granted Debrah bail to the tune of GH<\/span><span class=\"cf1\">\u00a22.5 million, with two sureties to be justified, allowing him temporary freedom while his appeal is determined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"cf1\">Debrah, a fleet manager by profession, was one of six individuals convicted on counts of conspiracy to commit high treason and committing high treason in November 2023. The court found the group guilty of plotting to destabilise the country and overthrow the constitutionally elected government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"cf1\">The six convicted persons<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">\u2014Donya\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">Kafui<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">, alias\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">Ezor<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">\u00a0(a blacksmith); Bright Alan Debrah Ofosu; Johannes\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">Zikpi<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">\u00a0(a civilian employee of the Ghana Armed Forces); and three soldiers, WO II Esther\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">Saan<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"cf0\">Dekuwine<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">, L\/<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">Cpl<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">\u00a0Ali Solomon, and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">Cpl<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">\u00a0Sylvester\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">Akanpewon<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">\u2014were sentenced to death by hanging following a lengthy trial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"cf0\">The case, which has been one of the most high-profile treason trials in Ghana\u2019s recent history, also saw the acquittal of ACP Dr. Benjamin\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">Agordzo<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">, Colonel Samuel\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">Kodzo<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"cf0\">Gameli<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">, and Corporal\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">Seidu<\/span><span class=\"cf0\">\u00a0Abubakar, who were found not guilty of abetment and conspiracy charges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"cf0\">The conviction followed years of legal proceedings that began in April 2021, when the accused were first charged with various counts of high treason, abetment, and conspiracy.
