Lawyer and former NDC MP for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, says the party\u2019s promise to Ghanaians to \u201cdo things differently\u201d must begin with how it handles its own internal affairs.<\/p>\n
Speaking on Joy News\u2019 PM Express on Wednesday, a member of the NDC\u2019s Ayawaso East Investigative Committee warned that failure to properly deal with issues such as vote buying and inducement in party primaries could erode public confidence.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe electorate gave NDC the power to govern this country on the promise that we will do things differently,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat difference\u2026 should extend to our internal operations, internal matters in the party.\u201d<\/p>\n
He argued that if the party downplays issues surrounding the Ayawaso East primary, it could erode public trust.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo if the party\u2026 release matters of this nature\u2026 it will sap the confidence that people who give us the mandate\u2026 on the promise of doing things differently.\u201d<\/p>\n
His comments follow the setting up of the investigative committee to examine claims that aspirants offered inducements, including television sets and cash, to delegates during the primary held on Saturday, February 7.<\/p>\n
Mr Fusseini said the committee\u2019s findings were clear. \u201cWe came to the conclusion, an unalloyed and firm conclusion, that there was widespread illegal activity. I mean, the voter buying and inducement.\u201d<\/p>\n
He stressed that the misconduct was not attributable to a single individual. \u201cVote buying and inducement in the Ayawaso\u2026 and it was not limited to one candidate.\u201d<\/p>\n
He disclosed that the committee recommended the party could annul the results of the election. When host Evans Mensah asked if that recommendation was included, he responded: \u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, he said the committee also warned the party about the serious legal and practical barriers involved.<\/p>\n
He explained that the elections were conducted under the supervision of the Electoral Commission and the results had already been certified.<\/p>\n

He raised what he called the key legal question: \u201cCan a Political Party overturn the verdict of the Electoral Commission when they did not conduct the election?\u201d<\/p>\n
He acknowledged the public pressure for annulment but insisted the party must act responsibly. \u201cPeople have a feeling\u2026 but the question is whether it will have a legal basis to stand up.\u201d<\/p>\n
Inusah Fuseini described what happened in Ayawaso East as \u201cacts of impunity,\u201d saying they violated several laws and internal party standards. He cited breaches of \u201cthe political party act, representation of people\u2019s act CI 127\u2026 the criminal code\u2026 our Constitution\u2026 our code of ethics\u2026 our values.\u201d<\/p>\n
He warned against responding in a way that could lead to further wrongdoing. \u201cDo you deal with impunity by acting with impunity? Do you deal with a wrong by acting wrongly?\u201d<\/p>\n
He also noted timing challenges, pointing out that the committee submitted its report \u201cyesterday at 4 pm\u201d and that \u201ctoday\u2026 is the final day to present a candidate.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite these hurdles, he said the committee still advised the party that annulment was possible, but only with careful consideration of the legal and procedural implications.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
