{"id":16160,"date":"2026-03-16T16:13:36","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T16:13:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fishfmonline.com\/?p=16160"},"modified":"2026-03-16T16:13:36","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T16:13:36","slug":"jinapor-electricity-meter-shortage-being-addressed-more-units-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fishfmonline.com\/?p=16160","title":{"rendered":"Jinapor: Electricity meter shortage being addressed, more units coming"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"jeg_share_top_container\">\n<div class=\"jeg_share_button clearfix\">\n<div class=\"jeg_sharelist\">Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor assured Parliament on Monday, March 16, that the shortage of electricity meters in Ghana is being addressed, with more units set to reach consumers in the coming weeks.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content no-share\">\n<div class=\"content-inner \">\n<p>Jinapor said the problem arose from a combination of oversubscribed contracts and funding constraints.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we assumed office for 2024, even though the ECG board approved about three billion cedis for contracts, more than nine billion cedis had already been awarded, including for meter supply,\u201d he explained, noting that this created a bottleneck in meter delivery.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister also pointed to the cash waterfall mechanism, which governs the allocation of revenue received by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), as a factor in the delay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means that the revenue ECG was receiving as a portion of its cash water fall allocation was not enough. So some of these meter manufacturing companies who had been given huge contracts could not meet that demand,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>To solve the problem, the Ministry has increased ECG\u2019s monthly allocation from GHS 300 million to GHS 360 million and indexed it to a percentage of the utility\u2019s total revenue collection. This gives ECG an incentive to increase its collections: the more revenue it collects, the higher the allocation it receives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf ECG wants to collect more than GHS 360 million, they have to work harder, because the more they collect, the more they get,\u201d Jinapor said.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister reassured the public that meters are now entering the system and distribution will accelerate, while stressing a strategic approach to avoid waste.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are on course, and the meters will be made available,\u201d he stated<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor assured Parliament on Monday, March 16, that the shortage of electricity meters in Ghana is being addressed, with more units set to reach consumers in the coming weeks.
