\u20b515,000-per-patient treatment that &#8216;cures&#8217; stroke"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some forty years ago, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital admitted about 200 stroke patients yearly but the figure has now jumped to more than a thousand<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cardiovascular disease is now the most predominant illness at the facility, necessitating the recent introduction of a time-bound treatment that works by dissolving clots that obstruct blood flow to the brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Active stroke thrombolysis, the new treatment, administers drugs and medication to dissolve blood clots in the brain during an acute ischemic stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the launch of the implementation of thrombolysis services, Consultant Neurologist at KATH, Dr. Fred Stephen Sarfo explained: \u201cThat clot is what the treatment seeks to dissolve to restore blood flow to the brain&#8221; so that the patient will &#8220;be able to talk again, and, in essence, cure the stroke, unlike in the past when there was not a proper cure for it&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ose-youtube ose-uid-374205bd7c1b4c8c4ac3361febfe475b ose-embedpress-responsive\" style=\"width:400px; encrypted-media;accelerometer;autoplay;clipboard-write;gyroscope;picture-in-picture clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen referrerpolicy=\"origin\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This is revolutionary and will change the stroke treatment landscape&#8221;, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added: \u201cThis one almost cures the stroke so the person doesn&#8217;t have to deal with paralysis and disability.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The approximate cost is about GH\u20b515,000 for treatment to be given and highly standardised and subsided at the Komfo Anokye,&#8221;
