{"id":4561,"date":"2024-04-03T09:49:26","date_gmt":"2024-04-03T09:49:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fishfmonline.com\/?p=4561"},"modified":"2024-04-03T09:49:29","modified_gmt":"2024-04-03T09:49:29","slug":"investigate-nungua-child-marriage-saga-ag-to-igp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fishfmonline.com\/?p=4561","title":{"rendered":"Investigate Nungua child marriage saga \u2013 AG to IGP"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice has charged the Ghana Police Service to expedite investigations into the marriage of the 12-year-old girl to the 63-year-old Ga priest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This comes after the priest Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, also known as Gborbu Wulomo, was seen performing the traditional marriage rights of Naa Okromo over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following widespread criticism, the Traditional Council denied claims and insisted that the ceremony was a betrothal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ose-youtube ose-uid-0412563c7061d50b11a01c04e5ed3db0 ose-embedpress-responsive\" style=\"width:400px; height:400px; max-height:400px; max-width:100%; display:inline-block;\" data-embed-type=\"Youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowFullScreen=\"true\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SupoGFCWLL0?feature=oembed&color=red&rel=0&controls=1&start=&end=&fs=0&iv_load_policy=0&autoplay=0&mute=0&modestbranding=0&cc_load_policy=1&playsinline=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; encrypted-media;accelerometer;autoplay;clipboard-write;gyroscope;picture-in-picture clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen referrerpolicy=\"origin\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, citing the Children\u2019s Act 1998, the Attorney General\u2019s office, on Tuesday, tasked the Inspector General of Police to verify the nature of the ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They stressed that the Children\u2019s Act prohibits the betrothal of children, and such actions are subject to punitive measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigations would enable the Ministry of Justice to prosecute any person found guilty of the crime stipulated in the Act, parts of the statement read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA person who contravenes a provision of sections 2 to 14 commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine&nbsp;not exceeding two hundred and fifty penalty units or to terms of imprisonment not exceeding one year or to both the fine and the imprisonment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe allegations, if proven, constitute a criminal offence for which all persons involved must face prosecution.
