{"id":7260,"date":"2024-07-22T06:32:36","date_gmt":"2024-07-22T06:32:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fishfmonline.com\/?p=7260"},"modified":"2024-07-22T06:32:39","modified_gmt":"2024-07-22T06:32:39","slug":"intensify-efforts-to-prevent-illicit-outflows-from-africa-akufo-addo-to-peers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fishfmonline.com\/?p=7260","title":{"rendered":"Intensify efforts to prevent illicit outflows from Africa \u2013 Akufo-Addo to peers\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Nana Akufo-Addo has called on his African peers to work with a sense of urgency to stop the illicit financial outflows from the continent.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said they needed to pay serious attention to and arrest the situation, which was depriving Africa of significant resources that could be used to support its development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The President made the call at the opening of the Sixth African Union (AU) Mid-Year Coordination meeting in Accra on Sunday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting aims to harmonise the AU\u2019s policies with those of the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and the Regional Mechanisms (RMs) and to deepen the Union\u2019s integration agenda.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will deliberate on pressing issues of economic integration, interregional trade and operations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting is on the theme \u201cEducate an African Fit for the 21<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;Century: Building Resilient Education Systems for Increased Access to Inclusive and Lifelong Quality and Relevant Learning in Africa.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"567\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fishfmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-676.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7261\" style=\"width:1085px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fishfmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-676.jpg 567w, https:\/\/www.fishfmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-676-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A host of African Heads of States and Governments, the heads of the regional economic communities, the heads of the regional mechanisms, and the members of the AU commission, as well as continental stakeholders are taking part in the meeting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Akufo-Addo told the gathering that effort must be made to implement the finding of the Mbeki Commission on illicit financial flows from Africa, made as far back as 2011, which reported the alarming scale at which resources were being illegally siphoned out of the continent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDespite the recommendations and the call to action, we have struggled to curb effectively these flows.
