{"id":8044,"date":"2024-09-03T09:36:11","date_gmt":"2024-09-03T09:36:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fishfmonline.com\/?p=8044"},"modified":"2024-09-03T09:36:14","modified_gmt":"2024-09-03T09:36:14","slug":"ghanas-fiscal-space-cannot-fund-political-party-pledges-theo-acheampong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fishfmonline.com\/?p=8044","title":{"rendered":"Ghana\u2019s fiscal space cannot fund political party pledges \u2013 Theo Acheampong."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Political and Economic Risk Analyst, Dr Theo Acheampong, says Ghana\u2019s fiscal space cannot support the pledges made by the country\u2019s major political parties.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou realise that these manifesto promises would have a big impact on the fiscal space, and there is actually no money lying around to fund some of their promises without borrowing from the international capital market,\u201d he stated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Acheampong made the statement during a political radio and television programme broadcast by Multimedia Networks and monitored by the Ghana News Agency.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He pointed out that, in comparison to the 2020 general elections, the two major political parties have made more promises, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) offering 620 and 380, respectively.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Acheampong said that the manifestos of the two parties lacked the policies needed to promote growth and economic transformation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the NDC\u2019s pledge of free primary healthcare, for instance, would cost $1.7 billion per year and $7 billion over four years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ose-youtube ose-uid-15974a32cf5078cb16a1fe27c72ce8d1 ose-embedpress-responsive\" style=\"width:400px; encrypted-media;accelerometer;autoplay;clipboard-write;gyroscope;picture-in-picture clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen referrerpolicy=\"origin\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Acheampong warned that the pledges would instead burden Ghanaians, leaving the future government with no choice but to raise taxes or borrow to fulfill them.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He emphasized that the manifestos must provide a clear benchmark related to specific sectoral outcomes for assessment and advised political parties to consider the financial implications of their proposed policy measures, as well as how they planned to support them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prof. John Osae Kwapong, a Fellow at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), said the two major political parties had not figured out the fiscal implications of their policies.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said political parties ought to offer voters information on how much their promises would cost and how they propose to fund them.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fellow asked stakeholders in the democratic arena to compel political parties to provide the funding mechanisms for their pledges.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Political and Economic Risk Analyst, Dr Theo Acheampong, says Ghana\u2019s fiscal space cannot support the pledges made by the country\u2019s major political parties.&nbsp;&nbsp;
