{"id":9552,"date":"2025-01-13T17:48:10","date_gmt":"2025-01-13T17:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fishfmonline.com\/?p=9552"},"modified":"2025-01-13T17:48:10","modified_gmt":"2025-01-13T17:48:10","slug":"puwu-reaffirms-opposition-to-ecg-privatisation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fishfmonline.com\/?p=9552","title":{"rendered":"PUWU reaffirms opposition to ECG privatisation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Public Utility Workers&#8217; Union of TUC Ghana (PUWU) has reiterated its stance against the privatisation of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).<\/p>\n<p>The Union says this forms part of its commitment to sustainable solutions for the nation\u2019s energy sector.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement dated January 13, PUWU extended its congratulations to President John Mahama on his election victory.<\/p>\n<p>PUWU acknowledged the surge of recommendations from various interest groups proposing solutions to the energy crisis. However, the union criticised the lack of evidence and stakeholder engagement behind many of these proposals, particularly those advocating for privatisation.<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/19zVE1RtmrRZy8dyjWuC0USVxGvkSiUCu\/preview\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not unaware of the numerous local and international groups seeking to invest in the power sector, especially ECG. Many of these groups have resurfaced with similar agendas despite past opposition,\u201d the statement noted.<\/p>\n<p>The union reaffirmed its long-standing position against privatizing ECG, maintaining that the existing alternative framework remains the best solution for Ghanaians and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>It also highlighted concerns over political interference in ECG\u2019s management and the rising costs of inputs in the power sector, which contribute to higher electricity tariffs<\/p>\n<p>PUWU pledged to work closely with the Mahama administration to develop sustainable strategies for ECG\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We promise to assist through the relevant ministries in finding solutions to the challenges of ECG in a sustainable manner,\u201d the statement concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Energy Minister-designate John Abdulai Jinapor has highlighted the need for private sector involvement in the operations of ECG to enhance efficiency and improve power distribution.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during his vetting by Parliament\u2019s Appointments Committee, Mr. Jinapor stressed the importance of a structured and transparent process to achieve this goal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe there should be private sector participation.
