Muntaka cautions against glorifying unexplained wealth in Ghana

Interior Minister and Member of Parliament for Asawase, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has raised concerns over what he described as the growing culture of glorifying wealth in Ghanaian society without questioning its source.

According to him, wealthy individuals are increasingly being revered, given titles and leadership positions, and allowed to influence decisions in communities solely because of their financial status.

He warned that the trend could negatively affect the upbringing of young people, who may grow up believing that wealth, rather than education, integrity and skills, is the primary measure of success.

“If people can do anything to get rich and they are revered in our society, then the future of the younger generation is at stake because they will also want to toe the same line.”

Mr Muntaka stressed the importance of education and skills development, arguing that society would not knowingly entrust critical leadership positions to people without the requisite knowledge and competence.

“Who wants an illiterate who cannot even recite major verses in the Holy Quran to be their Imam? Nobody,” he said.

The Interior Minister, however, expressed concern that despite the value society places on education and competence, excessive emphasis on wealth could influence young people to abandon those values.

He said the situation was becoming particularly worrying in communities where people who suddenly acquire unexplained wealth are immediately elevated to leadership positions.

Mr Muntaka also raised concerns about the influence of wealth within religious communities, saying financial status should not be the basis for determining leadership or social standing.

“Even in our mosques, people claim seating positions because they are rich, and our Imams should fight against this,” he said.

He called on religious leaders, traditional authorities and community leaders to collectively confront what he described as a growing societal “canker” of glorifying unexplained wealth.

“I am pleading that we should work at safeguarding the future of the younger ones and focus on giving them the right upbringing to make them useful and good leaders tomorrow.

“Let’s not let them copy the lifestyle of taking shortcuts to their future by making unexplained wealth,” he warned.

He urged community leadership to take deliberate steps to discourage the practice, saying it could undermine the values needed to guide the next generation.
