In a groundbreaking moment at the 66th Grammys, South African sensation Tyla emerged as the first-ever recipient of the newly introduced Best African Music Performance category.

The 22-year-old songstress claimed her maiden Grammy with the chart-topping track ‘Water,’ released in 2023 and acclaimed across 16 countries, including the UK and the US.

Competing against heavyweights such as Burna Boy, Davido, Asake, Olamide, Ayra Star, and Musa Keys, Tyla’s victory was announced at the Grammy Award Premiere Ceremony held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 4.

This category was established by the Recording Academy to honor African artists making remarkable strides on the global stage.

Tyla’s ‘Water’ outshone other contenders, including Davido’s ‘Unavailable,’ Asake’s ‘Amapiano,’ Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys,’ and Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush.’ The win solidifies Tyla’s position as a rising star in the international music scene.
