The former Majority Leader in Parliament and MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has called on Parliament to expedite the passage of Ghana’s lithium agreement.

He emphasised the urgency of securing the country’s position in the rapidly growing global market for lithium.

Speaking at a stakeholder forum in Parliament on Tuesday, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu highlighted the finite nature of lithium resources and warned against the risks of delaying legislative action.

As global demand for lithium— a key element in batteries for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage— continues to soar, the MP cautioned that Ghana’s opportunity to benefit from its lithium reserves could be lost if timely decisions are not made.

He stressed that without swift action, the nation risks its lithium assets becoming stranded, unable to contribute to the country’s economic growth.

“We must act decisively and quickly to avoid our lithium resources becoming stranded assets. Lithium is not an endless resource, and the current global dynamics mean that the window to capitalize on it may close sooner than we expect,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated.

While urging prompt action, he also advised that the agreement should be approached with careful consideration to ensure that Ghana fully benefits from its lithium deposits.
