Ex-Black Stars midfielder Sulley Muntari has branded the state of the Ghana Premier League as “a mess” in a damning verdict of the division.

Muntari, who featured for Liberty Professionals in 2000 before moving abroad, ended his glittering career in the second round of the 2021/22 season with Hearts of Oak.

The 40-year-old helped the Phobians clinch the President’s Cup, and the MTN FA but opted against extending his contract.

The former Inter and AC Milan anchorman described the domestic league as a “big hole” and has “no future”.

“Hearts fans and the president were amazing,” he said in an interview with 3Sports.

“The league is a big hole where they are dumping money. There is no future for the local league.

“I am hoping I can get some funds and really help them. It’s a mess. When I was there, it was a mess. Maybe now it is worse. If we don’t help these guys, we won’t get the top players.

“The changing rooms smell. That respect is not there. I didn’t even want my laundry done. I would take it home. When you get into changing rooms, they smell bad. It is not just one team. Everybody.”

The ongoing Premier League has no headline sponsor and a broadcast right holder.

Meanwhile, Muntari has had stints with English Premier League sides, Portsmouth and Sunderland.

The 2010 Champions League winner featured for Ghana between 2002 to 2014 and was key to the country’s qualification for the World Cup in Germany (2006), South Africa (2010) and Brazil (2014).
