The Accra Sports Stadium’s Presidential entrance has been turned into a dumping yard with about seven weeks left for Ghana’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The Black Stars host Chad at home and the facility, which hosted the nation’s last competitive match, appears in a deplorable state.

In a tour of the stadium, the pitch is in a good condition for matches but key areas around the facility are not a welcoming space for officials, guests, and spectators.

The Presidential entrance’s pathway has faulty machines, fridges, broken plastic chairs, tables and other wastes dumped there.

The Stadium’s water supply, along with the electricity room, is also nothing to write home about.

The room has no light, exposed wires are scattered everywhere, and there’s even a hole dug in a mini room.

The room near the scoreboard light is yet another example, filled with filth and riddled with holes dug by rats.

What seems even more alarming are the cracks, indicating how weak the structure has become. The washrooms are poorly maintained, with an almost unbearable stench.

Offices, including that of the Head of the Technical Department, are in terrible condition, with disconnected electricity, damaged ceilings, and broken tiles.

The Ghana Project Monitoring Group (GPMG) is a dedicated organization committed to raising awareness about faulty and abandoned projects across the country.

They are hopeful of collaborating with the Sports Ministry to address the issues of filth and disrepair.

“Our motive is to draw the attention of the authorities and government that there’s something wrong here and what can we do,” member of GPMG Ernest Banama told the press.

“Not only drawing the attention, we use our own hands to start something and wait for the government to assist us.”

The Accra Sports Stadium, known as the Nation’s Wembley, underwent a massive facelift worth GH¢12.5 million for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in 2018.
