Nations FC striker Emmanuel Annor has questioned the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) disciplinary standards following a GHS 500 fine imposed on him for displaying a religious message during a recent Ghana Premier League match against Asante Kotoko.

Annor was sanctioned after he celebrated a goal against Asante Kotoko by removing his shirt to reveal an undershirt with the inscription, “I belong to Jesus.”

The GFA’s Disciplinary Committee found the act in breach of its regulations, which prohibit the display of religious or political messages during matches.

He was also issued a formal warning, with the GFA cautioning that any recurrence could lead to harsher sanctions.

But in a defiant response posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the player questioned what he sees as double standards in the sport.

“Why can football players celebrate LGBTQ+ sexuality but not their love for Christ?” he wrote.

He accompanied the post with a Bible verse — Romans 14:8: “If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.”

He concluded with the statement: “It’s the Kingdom’s work on the pitch!”
