Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has expressed concern over the unexplained transfer of thousands of rounds of military ammunition from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to the National Security Secretariat in 2024. Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra, Dr. Boamah questioned the logic behind transferring the ammunition to a civilian-led agency without an operational fighting force.
“The truth is, the ammunition remains unaccounted for to date,” Dr. Boamah stated. “It’s puzzling how the GAF could transfer ammunition to National Security, which doesn’t have a fighting force, in 2024. This is a question that needs to be answered.”
The Defence Minister revealed that the GAF has referred the matter to the National Security Secretariat for investigation, as they were the recipients of the transferred ammunition. “The Ghana Armed Forces has passed it on to the National Security Secretariat to investigate, since they were the recipient,” Dr. Boamah added. The investigation aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the transfer and the current status of the ammunition.
