Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North by Speaker Alban Bagbin. Her induction comes after a fiercely contested rerun election, which was necessitated by the Electoral Commission’s annulment of the original December 2024 results due to allegations of electoral irregularities.
The rerun, held across 19 polling stations, saw Aubynn secure 34,090 votes, narrowly defeating her NPP counterpart, Akua Afriyie, who garnered 33,881 votes – a margin of just 209 votes. The EC’s decision to annul the original results stemmed from discrepancies in vote figures, unsigned result sheets and procedural breaches during the collation process.
Aubynn’s swearing-in marks a significant milestone for the NDC, granting the party a two-thirds majority in Ghana’s 275-member Parliament and bolstering their legislative influence. The ceremony was attended by senior NDC figures, lawmakers and dignitaries, underscoring the importance of this moment in the party’s 2025 legislative agenda.
