The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has announced plans to demolish all unauthorized structures erected on the protected Tema Ramsar Site. The demolition exercise is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 4, 2025, and will affect areas including Communities 5, 6, 10, 11, and 12.

The move follows increasing concerns about encroachment on the wetland, which serves as a critical ecological buffer and habitat for diverse wildlife.

During an unannounced inspection of the site earlier this week, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo expressed alarm at the scale of illegal development taking place within the Ramsar reserve.

She described the encroachment as “a serious threat to the ecological integrity of the Ramsar Site” and pledged swift action to halt the degradation.

“This is a protected area, and we cannot allow private developers or individuals to compromise its long-term environmental value,” the Minister said.

Madam Ocloo also issued a stern warning to persons involved in the illegal sale of parcels of land within the wetland, calling on them to cease their activities immediately.

She emphasised that the government would not tolerate the commercialisation of protected lands and would pursue legal action where necessary.

Residents and occupants of affected structures have been advised to vacate the area and remove their belongings before the start of the demolition to avoid loss or damage to property.

The Tema Ramsar Site is one of Ghana’s designated wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention and plays a vital role in flood control, water purification, and biodiversity conservation.

The planned exercise is part of broader efforts by REGSEC and the Regional Coordinating Council to reclaim and protect environmentally sensitive areas across the region.
