The Ashanti Regional Security Council has launched investigations into the ownership of a disputed mining site at Manso-Tontokrom in the Amansie South District, where tensions persist between residents and Asanko Gold Mines Limited.
During a visit to the site, the Council tasked the Minerals Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency to probe the root causes of the long-standing conflict, while urging calm among residents.
For years, the youth in the area have clashed with Asanko Gold Mines, which accuses them of encroaching on its legally acquired concessions.
In 2024, violence erupted between locals and private security guards protecting the company’s concession, leading to the deaths of three people.
Recently, residents raised concerns about the alleged deployment of military personnel by the mining firm, vowing to resist any such move. The site, still at the center of the dispute, continues to attract illegal mining activities by some youth.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene who led the Security Council delegation, appealed for calm and directed that persons below 18 years be barred from the mining site.
He assured that the Council will engage all stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the dispute.
