Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has taken to social media to celebrate the University for Development Studies (UDS) following its historic victory at the University World Cup held in China.
This follows their dramatic 2-1 victory over Brazil’s Paulista University in the final on Sunday.
The Ghanaian side had to dig deep after Gabriel Viera stunned them with a goal in the opening 30 seconds of the match.
But UDS refused to bow out, with captain Mohammed Sulemana striking late in injury time to level the score.
In a heartfelt message posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Vice President congratulated the UDS team for their “spirited journey” and praised their dedication, teamwork, and resilience, qualities she said had “lifted Ghana to the pinnacle of global university football.”
“After a spirited journey, players from Ghana’s University for Development Studies (UDS) have been crowned Champions of the University World Cup in China,” she wrote. “Your determination, teamwork, and resilience have lifted Ghana to the pinnacle of global university football. This victory is a triumph for UDS and the entire nation.”
UDS’s victory marks the first time a Ghanaian university, and indeed an African university, has won the prestigious FISU World University Football Cup.
