The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso East Constituency, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, has once denied allegations of vote buying linked to the party’s parliamentary primary held on Saturday, February 7, 2026.
In a statement issued to media houses on Monday, February 9, Baba Jamal confirmed that he had appeared before the three-member committee set up by the NDC to investigate the alleged inducements during the primary. He said he used the opportunity to firmly deny any involvement in vote buying and reiterated his innocence.
According to him, his political record in the constituency demonstrates respect for internal party democracy. He noted that he had previously contested two parliamentary primaries in Ayawaso East and lost on both occasions to the late Member of Parliament, outcomes he said he accepted in the spirit of party unity and cohesion.
Baba Jamal recalled that during the primaries ahead of the 2024 general elections, he obtained 309 votes against the winner’s 452 votes, stressing that his increasing support within the constituency is rooted in his initiatives, integrity, and commitment to improving representation for Ayawaso East.
He expressed gratitude to the investigative committee, chaired by former Minister of Information, Kofi Totobi Quakyi, for the opportunity to present his case. He also thanked delegates in the constituency for the confidence they have shown in him to lead the party into the upcoming by-election.
Meanwhile, the NDC committee investigating the allegations has indicated that it is making steady progress and remains on course to complete its work within the stipulated timeline. Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News, committee member and former Tamale Central MP, Inusah Fuseini, said the team has been engaging party officials, executives, and all candidates who contested the primary as part of its fact-finding mandate.
The committee, which also includes lawyer Emefa Fugah, is expected to submit its findings and recommendations by Tuesday, February 10. Beyond investigating the allegations, it is tasked with proposing measures to curb vote buying and inducements in future party primaries.
The Ayawaso East primary has been mired in controversy following reports that some delegates were allegedly induced with items including television sets and boiled eggs, triggering public debate and internal concern within the party.
Baba Jamal reaffirmed his commitment to the NDC and to the development of the Ayawaso East Constituency, stating that he remains driven by the collective desire to improve the lives of residents and secure better representation in Parliament.
