The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to work towards securing a decisive parliamentary majority in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking during a meeting with the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) on Wednesday, March 25, Mr Afenyo-Markin expressed confidence in the strength and resilience of the party, despite its current minority status in Parliament.

“We are 87, but trust me, we are mighty. It is not by word of mouth that we say we are mighty; we know it ourselves,” he stated. He downplayed the numerical advantage of the governing side, insisting that “their 189 does not say anything and is empty.”

The Effutu MP stressed that the NPP remains a formidable political force and must channel that strength into winning a commanding majority in the next election cycle. “We hold the power, so this time we want a mighty huge [victory]. We need a majority for Dr Bawumia in Parliament,” he said.

Mr Afenyo-Markin also drew parallels between the current political climate and the period leading up to the 2016 general elections, which saw the NPP return to power. According to him, the same sense of optimism and certainty is building within the party.

“The feeling I had in 2015 is the same feeling I am feeling today. In 2015, I said no matter what, we would win 2016, and we did,” he noted.

Turning his attention to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), he suggested there is uncertainty within its ranks about future leadership, amid claims that former President John Dramani Mahama may not seek another term.

“Some are saying that Mahama is not coming back, that he is just doing one term. Even the NDC does not know the candidate they will bring,” he remarked.

In contrast, Mr Afenyo-Markin said the NPP has a clear and credible flagbearer in Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, whom he described as “tried and tested” and capable of leading Ghana’s next phase of transformation.

“As for us, we have a candidate. He has been tried and tested. He is a man with solutions. Let us back him and start the new transformation under Dr Bawumia—no bend, no curve,” he urged.
