In a breathtaking showdown at Stade de Yamoussoukro, the Elephants of Ivory Coast roared to victory, sending shockwaves through the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Defying the odds, Ivory Coast triumphed in a penalty shootout against the reigning champions, Senegal, sealing their fate in the Round of 16.

The game marked a dramatic turnaround for Ivory Coast, who faced public dissatisfaction after back-to-back defeats in the group stages against Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea.

The discontent led to the swift dismissal of head coach Jean-Louis Gasset and his assistant Ghislain Printant, a decision validated by Monday’s exhilarating performance.

In a 90-minute nail-biter, a goal from Habib Diallo was met with a game-changing penalty kick expertly converted by Frank Kessie. With extra time failing to break the deadlock, the match was destined for a penalty shootout.

In a display of sheer class, the hosts clinched a 5-4 victory, eliminating Senegal and propelling themselves into the quarter-finals of the 2023 AFCON.

Ivory Coast’s stunning upset is sure to reverberate across the continent as they emerge as formidable contenders in the quest for African football glory.
