A heartbreaking incident has occurred in Accra-Town, Nkawkaw, where a 2-year-old girl lost her life after accidentally falling into an ancient manhole. The young girl, who had just returned from school and was eagerly awaiting a meal, tragically fell into the water-filled manhole while playing near her home.

The incident unfolded on Wednesday, February 7th, 2024, when the girl’s grandmother left to fetch food for her. Upon learning of the tragedy, the grandmother collapsed and was promptly rushed to the hospital.

Authorities revealed that the manhole, dating back over a century to the construction of the house, was only covered by a large black polythene bag, posing a grave danger to anyone in the vicinity.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is underway, underscoring the pressing need for enhanced infrastructure maintenance and safety measures to avert such devastating tragedies in the future.
