The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured Ghanaians that the country is prepared to respond to a possible Ebola outbreak, citing measures put in place to detect and manage suspected cases.
His assurance follows Nigeria’s confirmation of its first laboratory-confirmed Ebola case on October 20, 2026. The World Health Organisation confirmed the case in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory.
Speaking during a visit to the Accra International Airport, Mr Akandoh said Ghana had installed thermal scanners and introduced electronic health declaration forms, with laboratory testing and isolation facilities also available.
”I instructed for the installation of the Thermal scanners, and today it is in place. I also have instructed for the electronic declaration forms, we amended the form, and made some inputs. When it comes to testing, we are also ready; Noguchi is there, the Reference lab is also there, we have the Infectious Disease Center and some others. In terms of isolation and treatment, we are ready,” he said.
Mr Akandoh said Ghana would also strengthen surveillance, contact tracing and screening at the country’s points of entry to support early detection and prevent the spread of the disease.
He urged the public to remain calm, assuring Ghanaians that the country had measures in place to manage any confirmed case.
