President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Dr. Joseph Obeng, has lauded the 24-hour economy policy proposal from flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama.

He said the 24-hour economy, if well implemented, will be a game changer for the Ghanaian economy.

Dr. Joseph Obeng made these remarks when former President John Mahama called on the Union in Accra to solicit their views and concerns for the party’s 2024 manifesto.

He said, “Your Excellency, let me give you one thing about your 24-hour economy. People were just opposing but I said no, if even you say that it is already there, there is nothing wrong for us to enhance it. And there is more that we can do in the night.”

“There is more that we can do in the night, there are so many things that are creating new nuisance in the afternoon, a lot of them. When you go to Opera Square, Kantamanto, and Okaishie, in the afternoon, when people are shuttling around, that is where we are offloading our goods.”

This, according to Dr. Obeng, makes the business areas very congested, affecting traders.

He emphasised that it is time the country thinks about “things that create nuisance in the day and put them in the night.”

Meanwhile, former President John Dramani Mahama has promised to scrap some levies on the clearing of goods at the ports.

This was after he expressed shock at 22 levies and fees on the clearing of goods at the ports.

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) mentioned the Special Import Levy, Ghana Export/Import Bank levy, Ghana Education Trust Fund, Ghana Education Trust Fund Network Charge, African Union Import e-Levy Covid Health Recovery levy, as some of the taxes, while speaking to members of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) on Tuesday, April 9.
