The winner of the “Afrobeats Song Of The Year” award at the 25th edition of the TGMA which came off on Saturday, June 1, 2024, Olive Theboy, who is known in private life as Joel Ofori Bonsu, has shared some details of how he struggled when he decided to pursue music.

Following the successes he has chalked in the music industry after be became a mainstream artist in 2023, Olive Theboy has become one of the few young artists who is the favorite of many music lovers.

In an interview with Nana Romeo of Accra FM fame, the “GoodSin” hitmaker revealed that the journey has not been an easy one at all.

He disclosed that at some point in time, his biological mother wanted the police to arrest him because he was absenting himself from school at Opoku Ware Senior High just so he gets time to record his songs at the studio.

Olivetheboy emphasized that at the time, his mother could not understand why a brilliant student like himself who was reading science at the time, would want to literally waste his time on music.

Asked how they feel now about his decision to pursue music, Olive Theboy mentioned that they have given him their full supoort.

“I released my first EP in 2021 – that was when I was in school – after senior high school. They were expecting me to be in school but I was in the studios. I didn’t even tell them, the next thing they heard, I had released it,” he narrated, adding: “It came with a lot of threats. They wanted to arrest me, my own mom….They wanted to frighten me but like I said, it was not pleasant at the beginning. It was after a while we went to talk to them trying to convince them. Right now, she’s a proud mom,” he stated.

Currently, Olive Theboy says he is a student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST) where he is studying Metallurgical Engineering.

However, he has currently deferred the program to focus on his music.
