The Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey, has cautioned users of social media who issue threats on that platform to desist from it.

According to him, anyone who attempts to use social media to destabilize the upcoming elections will be dealt with.

“Often times, we read in the papers, and we see people threatening on social media. Very soon, anybody who makes a threatening statement to incite violence before, during and after the elections we will make sure the law deals with the person in a court of competent jurisdiction,” he said when he addressed personnel of the Ghana Police Service in Accra on July 17.

Speaking at the same ceremony, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia called on personnel of the Ghana Police Service to continue to be professional as the nation heads to the general elections.

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer recounted the immense contributions of the Ghana Police Service to fostering peace in the country.

He also emphasized on the role of the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare in facelifting the Ghana Police Service.

The Vice President called for more sacrifices from personnel of the Service.

“The people of Ghana have witnessed a significant transformation of the Police Service under our administration, a community and stakeholder engagement, enhanced intelligence operations and ensured a more responsive preparation, especially in the general elections,” Dr Bawumia said.

The Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare assured of the commitment of the Police Service to ensuring peaceful elections.

“Under the National Election Committee, we will do our utmost best working once again with all security agencies to ensure that this year’s elections are peaceful. And the country will continually be seen as a trail blazer and the rest of the continent will know, and we will go all out to ensure there is peace,” Dr Dampare said.

Later, Dr Bawumia commissioned the Ghana Police Shop.

Police officers are expected to patronise the shop for their uniforms and other accoutrement. The Police Shop will also provide adequate services to all officers across the country.

The Vice President lauded the Ghana Police Service to this edifice.

“The Police Shop is a dedicated shop where officers of the Police Service can purchase additional uniform items in support of what their respective institutions can provide, this will ensure officers always come out smart in their uniforms and also procure additional logistics to deliver on their mandate,” Dr Bawumia stated.
