The 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has emphasised the urgent need for leadership in Ghana that is compassionate, truthful, and accountable.

He said the current government, under President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Bawumia, has subjected Ghanaians to severe hardship while ignoring wise counsel that could help alleviate the nation’s challenges.

Speaking at an event titled ‘Mahama Fellowships with the Clergy’ in Accra on Tuesday, October 1, Mr Mahama outlined the numerous difficulties the Akufo-Addo administration has imposed on citizens.

He noted that despite several calls for guidance, the government remains unwilling to accept advice that could mitigate the current challenges.

The former President argued that his experience would enable him to navigate the country through its current economic struggles if elected in the upcoming elections.

He criticised the current leadership for failing to prioritise the well-being of Ghanaians and accused them of lacking humility in governance.

“Our natural resources, including water bodies and forests, are under severe threat from illegal mining driven by the greed of our leaders. This poses a grave danger to our survival.”

“Today, many of our children no longer see a future for themselves in their homeland. The collective dream of a prosperous nation is fading fast. You would expect that, at the very least, our leaders would listen to wise counsel and correct their course when heading down the wrong path.”

“Unfortunately, that humility is absent in those who have governed us for nearly eight years,” he insisted.

Mr Mahama also assured that under the next NDC administration, his government would focus on transforming the lives of citizens by providing honest leadership that fosters prosperity for all Ghanaians.”

“We must steer the country back onto genuine progress and transformation. This is the kind of leadership the NDC offers to the people of Ghana in the upcoming December 7 elections.

“Leadership that will be honest with the people, reject extravagance, tackle corruption, and invest the nation’s resources wisely to create prosperity and opportunities for all,” he added.
