The Minority Leader in Parliament and MP for Efutu, Alexander Afenyo Markin, has extended his well-wishes to members of the new leadership team of the National Democratic Congress in parliament.

Speaking on the floor on Thursday, Afenyo Markin emphasised the significance of this moment for the incoming leaders, noting that it is an important opportunity for them to serve the country in new capacities.

He acknowledged that their party has recognised their capabilities, and that President Mahama has honoured them with these new responsibilities.

Reflecting on their time together in the 8th Parliament, Afenyo Markin shared memories of the many difficult decisions that had to be made on the floor.

He recalled how on several occasions, Ghana’s Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson had to inform him that his side could not support certain government proposals. Despite the challenges, Afenyo Markin said, “I took it all in my stride, and today, democracy has triumphed.”

fenyo Markin also spoke about the strong friendship that he and Dr. Forson maintained despite their political differences.

He recalled instances when, after disagreements, they would avoid eye contact and communication altogether. “Sometimes, he would ignore my text messages and WhatsApp messages. But when he was done, he would come back and say, ‘Kwame, I’m sorry, I had to defend the party’s interests.’”

Turning his attention to the incoming Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, Afenyo Markin expressed his deepest respect for him.

“We served together in the ECOWAS Parliament, and you were always supportive. We earned the respect of our colleagues in the sub-region,” Afenyo Markin said. “I admire your ability to build consensus, your patience in negotiations, and your unwavering commitment to peace. I hold that in great respect.”

Afenyo Markin wished the entire new leadership team great success as they assume their new roles.

He expressed confidence that they would continue to uphold the peace and unity of the House, working alongside the Speaker to maintain order.

“Together, you have the opportunity to ensure that this House works effectively for the good of the country,” Afenyo Markin said.
