Professor Godfred Bokpin, an Economist and Professor of Finance at the University of Ghana Business School, has called on the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to take full advantage of its parliamentary majority to implement far-reaching economic and structural reforms.

Discussing the recent Bank of Ghana’s intervention in the country’s forex trade market on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Prof Bokpin emphasised that the NDC now has a rare opportunity to make significant changes, given its control of both the Executive and Legislature.

“This government has the best opportunity because practically we don’t have opposition in parliament, the NPP effectively walked themselves into a silent opposition by the way they conduct themselves, so the government has the leverage. In fact, there is broader support for this government and what they are doing, so they should take advantage of that and initiate far-reaching governance reforms, structural reforms, productivity-enhancing reforms because they got the numbers in parliament.”

He noted that the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government held a similar parliamentary majority but failed to utilise it effectively to address key national challenges.

“It was the same expectation we had when President Akufo-Addo came to office in 2017 because he had the numbers.”

Prof Bokpin urged the NDC to act decisively and prioritise the national interest, stressing that bold leadership and policy direction are essential if Ghana is to enhance current economic achievements.

“So if this government does not take advantage of the moment, we are likely to regret it sometime to come.”
