The Supreme Court has quashed an arrest warrant issued against social commentator Kelvin Taylor in a 4-1 majority decision. The court, presided over by Justice Imoro Amadu Tanko, ruled in favor of Taylor, who had been accused of contempt of court for making “scandalous” statements against a High Court judge.
The warrant was issued in January 2020 by Justice Eric Kyei-Baffour after Taylor allegedly made comments suggesting the judge’s promotion was linked to doing the government’s bidding. However, the Supreme Court’s decision to set aside the warrant has sparked debate on media freedom, judicial authority, and online commentary regulation in Ghana.
Taylor, known for his outspoken commentary on Ghanaian politics and social issues, had publicly challenged the warrant, arguing his comments were based on facts. The ruling is expected to provide clarity on the limits of warrants and contempt proceedings against individuals outside the court’s jurisdiction.
The full grounds for the decision are yet to be released, but the outcome has significant implications for freedom of expression and the regulation of online commentary in Ghana.
