Staff of the Northern Area branch of the Volta River Authority/Northern Electricity Distribution Company (VRA/NEDCo) have resumed full operations in Tamale and its surrounding areas after a temporary suspension of services due to violent attacks on personnel.
The decision, which took effect on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, was reached during an emergency meeting held by staff in Tamale, following a series of engagements with key government and security stakeholders.
The resumption of services comes days after workers suspended operations in protest of the assault on staff and the seizure of operational vehicles by irate youth in Tamale. This incident sparked concerns over the safety of utility workers in the region.
The breakthrough follows high-level mediation led by the Minister of Energy, John Abdulai Jinapor, who met with staff leadership, the Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, Adam Abubakari Takoro, and Northern Region security chiefs.
These discussions yielded a set of firm assurances to protect workers and prevent similar incidents in the future.
In a statement released on Wednesday, August 6, the Ministry of Interior directed the Northern Regional Police Command to intensify investigations and ensure the perpetrators of the assault are swiftly brought to justice.
Additionally, the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, through its MCE, pledged to engage local chiefs in efforts to issue a public appeal for residents to refrain from attacking NEDCo staff.
The Energy Minister also promised further engagement with community stakeholders to guarantee the safety of utility personnel.
