This follows the death of the Member of Parliament for the area, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, which has rendered the seat vacant in accordance with Article 112(5) of the Constitution.
Dr. Murtala was among the eight individuals who lost their lives in the August 6 helicopter crash. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not contest the by-election, citing respect for the late MP.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 19, the EC said nominations from prospective candidates will be received at its Tamale Metropolitan Office from Monday, September 8, 2025, to Wednesday, September 10, 2025, between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., as well as 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day.
Nomination forms will be available for download from the Commission’s website, www.ec.gov.gh, from August 19, 2025, until September 10, 2025.
According to the Commission, prospective candidates may personally submit their completed forms or have them delivered by their proposer or seconder to the Returning Officer at the Tamale Metropolitan Office during the stipulated period.
The EC assured stakeholders that it remains committed to ensuring a transparent and credible process for the by-election.
