The Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana is mounting pressure on the government to act swiftly on the country’s ballooning debt, now estimated at over GH¢800 billion.

According to Congress, the unsustainable debt burden is draining national resources and denying citizens access to critical infrastructure and social development.

Presenting a petition to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat in Accra on Friday, August 29, TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah cautioned that workers will not remain passive.

He stressed that if immediate measures are not taken, the union will be compelled to adopt what he described as “drastic measures. We want to announce our presence to the Government of Ghana through AfCFTA that if nothing is done about our debt, which is denying us better schools, hospitals, and many amenities, Ghanaians will be forced to take action.

“We are here to present our petition so that AfCFTA can also understand what unions across Africa are demanding,” Mr. Ansah stated.

However, a Senior Advisor to the Secretary General of the African Continental Free Trade Area , Albert Kan-Dapaah Jnr received the petition on behalf of the Secretariat and assured it will be delivered to the appropriate quarters.
