Asanko Gold Ghana Ltd. says it is working closely with authorities and community leaders following deadly clashes near its mining concession in Mpatuam, Amansie South District.
The company, in a press release issued Tuesday, September 9, confirmed that the violence involved confrontations between military personnel and local residents on its operational site.
The military presence, according to Asanko, is part of a state-mandated security operation coordinated through the Ghana Chamber of Mines.
Tensions reportedly escalated over Monday and Tuesday, resulting in civil unrest, an attack on military camps, and an incursion into Asanko’s mining areas. The company confirmed there was a fatality and “significant damage to contractor equipment.”
Asanko expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and emphasized its commitment to resolving the situation peacefully. “
“We share in the community’s grief over the tragic loss of life,” the company stated. “We are working closely with local authorities, government officials, and community leaders to address the situation.”
Investigations into the incident are ongoing. Asanko says it will provide further updates once those investigations are complete.
