The Railway Workers Union of Ghana (RWU), under the Trades Union Congress (TUC-Ghana), has officially notified the Ghana Police Service of its intention to embark on a nationwide strike and peaceful picketing on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
In a letter addressed to the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, dated September 15, 2025, the Union said the decision follows 12 months of unpaid salaries and entitlements, which it described as a major source of hardship for railway workers and their families.
According to the Union, the salary delays—dating back to October 2024—have left many workers in financial distress, leading to broken homes, health complications such as strokes, and disruptions in their children’s education.
Despite repeated appeals to the Ministry of Transport and other relevant authorities, the Union noted that no negotiations, mediation, or arbitration measures, as required under the Labour Act, have been initiated to resolve the matter.
The planned industrial action will see workers from Tema, Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tarkwa converge for a peaceful procession. The march will begin at the Ministry of Transport in Accra, continue to Parliament to present a petition, proceed to the Ghana Railway Development Authority, and conclude at the TUC-Ghana headquarters.
The Union assured the police that the exercise would be peaceful and conducted in strict compliance with the law. It also requested security support to ensure the safety of participants and the general public.
The Railway Workers Union has copied the notice to several key state institutions, including the Chief of Staff, the Speaker of Parliament, the National Labour Commission, the Ministry of Labour, the Ministry of Transport, the Ghana Railway Company Limited, and the Trades Union Congress.
