Parents and relatives of victims of the tragic stampede at El-Wak Stadium have called on the government to implement proper recruitment procedures, following the admission of two more injured applicants to the 37 Military Hospital.

Speaking during a visit to the victims on Thursday, November 14, Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, described the condition of the patients as “fairly stable” and assured families that the government would provide full support to both the victims and the bereaved.

She further emphasised the need for special consideration for women in future recruitment exercises.

“We must ensure fairness and prevent such incidents from recurring. The safety of all applicants is paramount,” Minister Lartey said.

Hospital authorities confirmed that three patients remain in the Intensive Care Unit, while two others have been transferred to a regular ward for continued treatment.

Although most are responding well, no patient has yet been discharged.

Some families have urged the government to restructure recruitment processes to make them more orderly and transparent. They warned that without proper measures, similar tragedies could occur in future exercises.

The stampede occurred on Wednesday, November 13, during a Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise at El-Wak Sports Stadium, resulting in the deaths of six young women.

The incident has sparked nationwide calls for accountability and the implementation of safer recruitment practices.  Deputy Defence Minister and Minister Lartey visited bereaved families in Accra, promising the government’s full support and highlighting the need for urgent reforms to prevent a repeat of the tragedy.
