One person has died, while several others are in critical condition following a head-on collision between two commercial vehicles at Ejisu in the Ashanti Region.
The accident involved a Ford with registration number AW 3264-21 and a Toyota Hiace with registration number AS 3552-20.
According to eyewitnesses, the Toyota Hiace, which was travelling towards Kumasi, lost control at high speed and collided with the Ford, which was heading from Kumasi towards Ejisu.
The impact left occupants of both vehicles with severe injuries. Among the victims were two senior high school students.
“Many of the passengers were injured, some with broken hands and legs. All the seats in the car were damaged,” an eyewitness, Michael Asante, said.
Providing an update on the victims’ condition, the Medical Director of Living Waters Hospital, Dr Gabriel Sekyi Kwofie, said the facility received 31 victims, including an elderly man believed to be in his 70s who died shortly after arrival.
Dr Kwofie disclosed that 11 of the victims are currently in the theatre, with more expected to undergo surgery. He added that two victims are suspected to have sustained head injuries, while others suffered multiple lacerations.
revealed that two students were among those injured. One is a Form Three student of Yaa Asantewaa Senior High School, who was travelling from Dwenase to school and is currently in stable condition after sustaining minor injuries. The other is a nursing student of the Ntotroso Nursing Training College, who was on her way to the Ejisu Government Hospital for clinical training.
Dr Kwofie noted that most of the victims do not have National Health Insurance or the financial means to cover the cost of treatment. However, he said some patients with minor injuries were treated and discharged free of charge.
He added that the family of the deceased elderly man has not yet been identified, as investigations into the accident continue.
