Former Assin Central Member of Parliament and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has pledged to unite the party if he emerges victorious in the primaries, stressing the need for cohesion ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking to Channel One News at a polling centre in Assin Central in the Central Region on Saturday, January 31, Mr Agyapong stated, “If I’m the winner, I will be able to bring the party together.”
He added that regardless of the outcome, the party must remain united, noting that internal contests can be tough but should not result in divisions.
“This shouldn’t be a problem at all. We’re all going to come together as one party and work. As for contests, sometimes it gets tough, and some words are used which are not palatable, but we have to take it as it is, but that doesn’t mean we should go out of the party,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the party’s ongoing presidential primaries will be conducted fairly, adding that he does not expect a repeat of the incidents that marred the party’s 2023 presidential primaries.
“I don’t think there will be a repetition of what happened in 2023. We hope it doesn’t happen. We have all done our job well to prevent rigging and everything, so I expect a fair contest,” he said.
Mr Agyapong also appealed to delegates to vote massively in his favour, urging them to “vote number one.”
The NPP presidential primaries are currently underway nationwide.
Mr Agyapong is contesting the party’s flagbearer position against former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr Bryan Acheampong, former Minister of Education Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
