Presidential hopefuls of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Bryan Acheampong and Kwabena Agyapong, have congratulated former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia following provisional results that project him as the winner of the party’s flagbearer primary.
They made the congratulatory remarks in a phone call to Dr Bawumia after early results from the polls showed the Vice President in a commanding lead across several constituencies.
According to Dr Acheampong, while he had hoped to emerge victorious, he respects the decision of delegates, describing the outcome as one endorsed by God and reflective of the democratic will of the party.
He also expressed gratitude to delegates who voted for him, saying he willingly accepts the results in the spirit of unity and internal democracy.
“I just called to congratulate you on a very good election. You have done well. This is a God factor, so let us keep it like that. My big brother, congratulations. Democracy has won, the internal election has won. We are very happy with the results that we got,” he said.
Meanwhile, fellow flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has also reached out to Dr Bawumia, calling to apologise for comments he made about him during the campaign, which he later described as unacceptable.
The gestures of goodwill come amid efforts to quickly unite the party following the closely watched contest, as leaders and aspirants emphasise cohesion ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Provisional results show Dr Bawumia polling over 90,000 votes, with the remaining candidates sharing close to 50,000 votes, further strengthening his projected victory as collation continues.
