Ayawaso East: We’ll not engage in vote-buying – NPP

The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has declared that his party will not engage in vote-buying in the Ayawaso East by-election, insisting that the NPP offers leadership, not inducements.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Monday, March 2, Salam Mustapha took a swipe at the campaign style of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, accusing him of engaging in vote-buying during the party’s constituency primary.

He maintained that the NPP’s focus remains on the welfare of constituents and the delivery of credible leadership.

“We have made it clear to the good people of Ayawaso East that motorbikes, GHC10,000 and  TV sets, we have none. However, give the commitment of our conviction that indeed we will provide the needed leadership that the constituency deserves and put them first. Not some voting machines that whom at any point in time people will use to perfect their political agenda,” he said.

His comments come as a new survey by Global InfoAnalytics projects victory for the NDC candidate in Tuesday’s contest.

The poll, conducted between February 28 and March 1 with a sample of 972 voters, places Baba Jamal significantly ahead with 75 percent of projected votes. The NPP’s Baba Ali is projected to secure 21 percent.

Independent candidate Umar Sanda Muhammed, who defected from the NDC, is projected to obtain 3 percent.

With just a day to the polls, the Ayawaso East by-election is shaping up as a closely watched political contest, even as the NPP insists its strategy — centred on leadership rather than inducements — will ultimately deliver victory.
