Ghana has introduced a commercial electric vehicle (EV) charging tariff as part of a broader reduction in utility costs, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced on Friday, March 13, 2026.

The new tariff sets EV charging at 201.6 Ghana pesewas (GH¢2.016) per kilowatt-hour, with a service charge of GH¢500 per month, marking the first time the country has regulated commercial EV electricity pricing.

The introduction of the EV tariff comes alongside an average 4.81% reduction in electricity rates and a 3.06% cut in water tariffs, effective April 1, 2026, following the PURC’s routine quarterly review.

Residential electricity users will see reductions ranging from 1.66% for low-consumption households to 3.63% for high-consumption non-residential users, while medium- and high-voltage commercial and industrial customers will benefit from cuts of up to 15.43%.

Water customers will also pay less. Lifeline residential users for 0–5 cubic meters will see tariffs drop from GH¢612.25 to GH¢593.49 per cubic meter, with similar reductions across commercial, industrial, and bottled water rates.

PURC said the adjustments reflect changes in the Ghana Cedi-US Dollar exchange rate, inflation, natural gas prices, and electricity generation mix, while ensuring that utility providers remain financially viable.

“The quarterly review ensures that tariffs remain fair for consumers while supporting the operational needs of service providers,” said Shafic Suleman, Executive Secretary of PURC.
