The General Legal Council has admitted 1,568 new lawyers to the Ghana Bar, formally ushering them into the legal profession at a ceremony held at the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) in Teshie, Accra.
The new entrants have completed years of legal education and professional training, qualifying them to join the ranks of legal practitioners in the country upon fulfilling the required admission formalities.
Among the prominent personalities admitted to the Bar are the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George; the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah; Citi FM’s Eyewitness News host, Umaru Sanda Amadu; and former Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Acheampong.
The cohort is the penultimate group expected to be admitted under the old legal education system, which required applicants to obtain a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree before passing an entrance examination for admission to the Ghana School of Law.
Their admission comes as Ghana’s legal education framework undergoes changes, broadening the range of institutions involved in professional legal training.
The ceremony marks the culmination of years of academic work and professional preparation for the 1,568 candidates, who now join a profession responsible for upholding the rule of law and administering justice.
