An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has been killed and another critically injured following an explosion involving a motor tricycle carrying suspected dynamite at Hamile in the Upper West Region.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, 3 November, along an unauthorised route in the border community near Ghana’s boundary with Burkina Faso.
Information gathered from security sources in Hamile indicates that the explosion also killed the civilians transporting the suspected explosives on the tricycle.
The civilians were reportedly being pursued by security personnel after allegedly failing to stop at a checkpoint.
According to initial accounts, security personnel attempted to intercept the tricycle while it was travelling along the unauthorised route. The occupants allegedly failed to comply with instructions to stop, leading to a pursuit that ended in the explosion.
The blast caught the pursuing officers, killing one Immigration officer and leaving another with critical injuries.
The injured officer is said to be in serious condition, although details about the extent of the injuries and the medical facility where the officer is receiving treatment remain unclear.
Hamile is a border community in the Upper West Region where security agencies conduct surveillance and operations to monitor cross-border movements and prevent security threats.
The incident has raised concerns about the transportation of suspected explosive materials through unauthorised routes and the challenges facing security agencies in monitoring such movements.
