New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has sharpened his campaign message with a strong critique of fellow aspirants, insisting that any economic plan for Ghana anchored on negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) amounts to failure.
In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on September 6, Mr Agyapong argued that Ghana’s frequent reliance on IMF bailouts reflects poor leadership and weak economic strategy.
“You want to lead Ghana, yet your main concern is who can negotiate best with the IMF? Let me be clear: If your vision for Ghana starts with a trip to the IMF, you have already failed,” Agyapong wrote.
He outlined his vision of building a self-reliant economy capable of thriving without external financial support.
“My vision is to build an economy so self-reliant and powerful that the IMF becomes irrelevant,” he stated.
The comments, widely interpreted as a swipe at rivals within the NPP, come ahead of the party’s flagbearer election to choose a leader for the 2028 general elections.
Among his competitors is Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who led the Economic Management Team during Ghana’s current IMF programme.
His campaign emphasises domestic investment, job creation through manufacturing, and fiscal discipline to curb excessive borrowing.
