The management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has disclosed that nearly 300 highly skilled and specialised health professionals have left the facility between January and June 2025 in search of better opportunities abroad.

The development, described by hospital officials as alarming, poses a growing threat to healthcare delivery at Ghana’s premier referral centre.

Deputy Medical Director of Korle Bu, Dr. Harry Akoto, in an interview with Citi News on Thursday, September 18, disclosed the figures during a needs assessment visit by the administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund—popularly known as Mahama Cares.

The needs assessment initiative is set for a nationwide rollout to provide financial support for individuals with chronic and non-communicable diseases not covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Dr. Akoto cautioned that unless immediate interventions are implemented to improve working conditions, remuneration, and training opportunities, Ghana risks losing more of its most experienced medical professionals to developed countries.

“When we look at our data, we have approximately 300 people leaving between January and June this year. These are people who are highly skilled and highly specialised.

“The issues are multifactorial; some are based on a poor work environment. But the chunk of it is remuneration. People feel they can get more out there than being here,” he explained.
