Commercial transport operators of Ghana have strongly pushed back against a decision by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) to ban the use of Toyota Voxy vehicles for commercial transport, describing the move as misguided and harmful to livelihoods.
In a press release dated April 8, 2026, the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana criticised the Authority’s stance, arguing that a blanket ban is not the solution to addressing road safety concerns.
“The decision to ban the Toyota Voxy for commercial purposes is a lazy and ill-conceived approach,” the group stated, urging the NRSA to reconsider its position and engage industry stakeholders.
The operators maintained that the Toyota Voxy remains a widely used and reliable vehicle within the transport sector, warning that the directive could negatively impact many drivers and their families who depend on it for income.
They called on the NRSA to shift focus towards driver education and training, including the organisation of road safety seminars to improve driving standards.
The group further urged authorities to adopt targeted safety interventions in high-risk areas and address underlying challenges such as poor road infrastructure, which they say contribute significantly to road accidents.
The response follows a directive by the NRSA declaring that Toyota Voxy vehicles being used for commercial transport are operating illegally due to regulatory breaches and safety concerns.
According to the Authority, many of the vehicles are right-hand-drive and do not meet legal requirements for use on Ghana’s roads, particularly for commercial purposes. A technical working group also found that the vehicles were not originally designed for commercial use and that steering conversions often fail to meet approved safety standards.
However, the transport operators insist the approach taken by the NRSA reflects a lack of understanding of the sector, vowing to take all necessary steps to protect the interests of their members.

The Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana view the National Road Safety Authority’s (NRSA) decision to ban the Toyota Voxy for commercial purposes as a lazy and ill-conceived approach to addressing road safety concerns. We strongly condemn this move and urge the NRSA to reconsider.
Rather than engaging in blanket bans, the NRSA should focus on educating drivers on road safety tips and organizing seminars to enhance their skills. The Toyota Voxy is a popular and reliable vehicle, widely used for commercial transport, and its ban will cause significant hardship for many families.
We demand that the NRSA:
