African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, has called for a transformation of Ghana’s education system, urging a shift from an emphasis on academic certificates to one that fosters innovation, creativity, and ethical leadership.
Speaking at the second edition of the Mfantsipim Sesquicentennial Lecture on Wednesday, July 29, Dr. Chambas said Ghana’s education system must continually evolve to prepare young people to compete globally, create jobs, and contribute meaningfully to national development.
“The question is, is our educational system churning out products who can compete globally? Are we nurturing innovators capable of creating jobs rather than merely seeking employment?” he asked.
Dr. Chambas said education should go beyond the acquisition of certificates and focus on building character, wisdom, integrity, and practical skills needed in a rapidly changing world.
“Education is not merely about acquiring certificates. It is about forming character, cultivating wisdom, nurturing integrity, and preparing women and men who possess intellectual excellence, relevant technological skills, and moral courage and character,” he said.
He stressed that a well-structured education system has the power to strengthen democracy, shape responsible citizens, and equip young people with the skills needed to generate employment rather than depend solely on existing jobs.
Dr. Chambas also questioned whether Ghana’s education system was producing citizens who embrace diversity, uphold constitutional democracy, and reject corruption.
“Are we raising citizens who respect diversity, defend constitutional democracy, and reject corruption? Are we equipping our young people to harness artificial intelligence while preserving the ethical values that define our humanity?” he asked.
According to him, these were critical questions that required honest national reflection as Ghana seeks to improve the quality and relevance of its education system in an increasingly technology-driven global economy.
Dr. Chambas urged policymakers, educators, and other stakeholders to ensure that education remains a tool for developing innovative, ethical, and globally competitive citizens capable of driving the country’s future development.
