Coalition of Unemployed Graduates with Disabilities is set to picket at the Jubilee House today [August 19] over what it describes as the  government’s failure to fulfil the legal requirement to recruit persons with disabilities into public institutions.

The group says it is protesting what it considers inadequate representation of persons with disabilities in recent public-sector recruitment exercises, despite efforts to provide authorities with the names of qualified graduates who are seeking employment.

According to the Coalition, it submitted a verified list of 200 qualified graduates with disabilities for consideration during the recent recruitment exercise conducted by the Ghana Education Service (GES), but none of the individuals on the list was employed.

The group argues that the development raises serious concerns about the implementation of the legal provisions intended to promote the inclusion of persons with disabilities in employment.

The Coalition is therefore demanding government action to ensure that qualified graduates with disabilities are given opportunities to secure jobs within the public sector.

Speaking to newsmen, convenor of the coalition, Gilbert Boateng Agyare, said the group is specifically calling on the Ministry of Finance to provide financial clearance to facilitate the recruitment and deployment of its members to various government institutions.

“We want the Finance Ministry to issue 400 to 500 financial clearances to help deploy our people to the various government institutions. Recently, GES did a recruitment of about 7,000 people, and we submitted about 200 names to GES and nothing happened, and so we think that is repugnant.

“So why can’t we go to the Jubilee House to let the president know the realities faced by persons with disabilities?. We think that if these financial clarifications are given, definitely our people are going to be catered for.”
